Custom valving is available for an additional charge. To maintain a good damping adjustment range we recommend custom valving for spring rates that deviate more than 2k from the standard Ohlins rates.
After selling hundreds of sets of these over the years and tens thousands of sets of custom coilovers in general it is a proven fact that coilovers are not a one size fits all part. Road & Tracks typically are only available with one specific preset spring rate spec. Although the standard spring rates work very well for many people they are not ideal for every build. After extensive dyno testing of this product at our Florida shock R&D facility we have determined that these coilovers will accommodate +/- 3k spring rates with the standard valving, but we highly recommend the custom valving option if you deviate more than 2k from the standard rates. We recommend this order to maintain a meaningful amount of rebound adjustment. If you select the custom valving option we can do pretty much anything spring rate wise from a valving standpoint. Sometimes on the softer end of the spectrum shock stroke can become an issue, but we have taken the guesswork out of that with real world testing.
On the 2008-2021 Subaru WRX and STi the default Ohlins rates are 9k front 9k rear which tends to understeer at the limit due to double wishbone rear suspension coupled with MacPherson strut front suspension. This can be desirable, but some people are looking for a more neutral feel. Most of the custom sets that we sell both with this brand and with many other top shelf brands have equal rates front and rear for these applications. This is a far more neutral setup. Sometimes when people want extra rotation we even sell stiffer rear springs. This setup is popular with autocrossers.
For a daily driver we would recommend 8k 8k if you want something that does everything well. It also maintains good adjustment range without custom valving which gives you a lower cost and quicker lead time. If you want the smoothest possible ride quality our recommendation would be dropping spring rates to 7k 7k (custom front shock valving highly recommended). If you don’t mind a stiffer setup in exchange for better handling and less body roll then bumping it up to, 9k 9k or 10k 10k would be our recommendation for a street driven car (custom rear shock valving highly recommended). For track use you can go even stiffer. We have made these coilovers extremely modular. You have many options, and even if you want to switch back to the standard Ohlins rates or put together another combination you still get the regular Ohlins springs free in the box.

Please Note: Depending on availability the custom Hyperco springs may ship separately from the coilovers, but typically you should receive everything within a week or less if there is no custom valving. Not everyone is aware of this, but Ohlins does not preassemble their coilovers which means there is no additional work for the end user to install the springs. Custom valved sets have a lead time of 3 to 6 weeks depending on our work load.
